Course Description

Overview

What we eat shapes health at every stage of life, and the science behind food choices has become central to tackling some of today's most pressing public health concerns. The BSc (Hons) Nutrition course at the University of Lancashire takes a scientific approach to the subject, linking the worlds of healthcare and the food industry. Students examine how diet and lifestyle influence chronic conditions, and how carefully designed nutrition plans can help prevent or reduce their impact. Teaching is delivered by qualified nutritionists, exercise specialists and industry professionals, and it draws on real-life examples and local projects. Practical learning takes place in a physiology laboratory, with specialist nutrition and food chemistry equipment, and through the Eat-2-Win clinic and Wellness Centre. Work experience, involvement in real-world research and study abroad through partner universities in the United States, Canada and China add further breadth. The course suits those who want a science-led route into nutrition and who wish to build both technical knowledge and the ability to apply it in professional settings.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will understand how nutrition operates at several levels, from the chemistry of food and the physiology of the human body through to the wider patterns of disease affecting whole populations. They will be able to critically evaluate scientific evidence on chronic and metabolic conditions and apply that understanding to real public health and individual health challenges. Practical experience in the laboratory, the Eat-2-Win clinic and the Wellness Centre will equip them to assess needs and construct evidence-based nutrition plans with confidence. Work with local health organisations, sports clubs and research projects will strengthen their ability to move between theory and practice, while international links offer a broader perspective on the field. Students will also be able to shape their studies towards areas that interest them most, whether in health, exercise, food science or industry, leaving them prepared to contribute to preventing disease through informed nutritional practice.
