Course Description

Overview

The BSc (Hons) Pharmacology course explores how medicines and other biologically active substances interact with the human body. Students develop an understanding of the scientific principles behind drug action, therapeutic effects, and adverse responses, combining knowledge from areas such as biology, chemistry, physiology, and biomedical science.

What You'll Learn

  • Fundamental principles of pharmacology and drug action

  • Human anatomy, physiology, and the biological processes underlying health and disease

  • Pharmacokinetics, including how drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolised, and eliminated

  • Pharmacodynamics and the mechanisms through which medicines produce their effects

  • Drug-receptor interactions and cellular signalling

  • Molecular and cellular biology relevant to pharmacological research

  • Biochemistry and the chemical basis of drug activity

  • The pharmacology of medicines used to address different diseases and disorders

  • Toxicology, adverse drug reactions, and principles of drug safety

  • Experimental techniques used in pharmacological and biomedical investigation

  • Research methods, data analysis, scientific interpretation, and laboratory practice

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain the mechanisms through which drugs affect biological systems and evaluate factors that influence their effectiveness and safety. They will be able to interpret pharmacological data, apply appropriate scientific methods, and assess experimental findings using evidence-based reasoning. Students will also develop the ability to discuss drug actions within relevant biological and clinical contexts, analyse scientific information critically, and communicate pharmacological concepts and research findings clearly.
