Course Description

Overview

This foundation-level programme prepares students for progression into an undergraduate degree exploring the science of the mind and human behaviour. Delivered as part of the University of Kent's international pathway provision, it combines quantitative skills with early psychological theory to build the academic base needed for degree-level study. The course is structured to support students moving from varied educational backgrounds into a demanding, evidence-based discipline.

What You'll Learn

  • Mathematical techniques for analysing numerical and statistical data, including presenting findings through graphs and spreadsheets

  • The historical development of psychology, covering major theories and approaches

  • Key studies and experiments in cognitive, social, and developmental psychology

  • Sociological perspectives on how societies function and how these connect to broader social science thinking

  • Behavioural, cognitive, and psychodynamic approaches to psychological study

  • Ethical considerations relevant to psychological research methods

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this programme, students will be able to apply mathematical and statistical techniques to interpret quantitative data relevant to psychological research. They will have developed a grounded understanding of major psychological theories and how they explain human thought, development, and behaviour, alongside awareness of the ethical principles guiding research in this field. These outcomes will prepare graduates to enter the first year of a BSc (Hons) Psychology degree with the theoretical knowledge and analytical skills the programme requires.
