Course Description

Overview

Understanding the mind and behaviour offers real tools for tackling some of society's biggest challenges, from mental health support to education and public policy. The BSc (Hons) Psychology at the University of Birmingham takes students through the full breadth of the discipline, covering cognitive, developmental, social and biological psychology while building strong research skills from the very first year. Teaching is delivered by world-leading researchers using state-of-the-art labs in brain sciences and cognition, with options to add a year abroad, a placement year, or a year in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. The course suits students who want a scientifically rigorous, BPS-accredited route into psychology, with a genuinely broad curriculum spanning the mind, brain and behaviour.

What You'll Learn

  • Cognitive psychology, psychobiology and developmental psychology in the first year

  • Core research methods and the ethical foundations of psychological study

  • Social and cognitive development, alongside language and communication

  • The neural basis of vision and action

  • Advanced research methods, building toward independent scientific investigation

  • Specialist final-year topics such as clinical psychology, sleep and health, or crime and antisocial behaviour

  • Social and differential psychology, exploring individual and group differences

  • A major independent research project, designing and conducting your own study

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to critically evaluate psychological theories across cognitive, developmental, social and biological domains, grounded in current research. They will be equipped to design and conduct psychological studies, applying strong research methods and data analysis skills built up over three years. Through a major independent research project, students will develop the ability to formulate research questions, collect and interpret data, and communicate findings to a professional standard. Graduates will leave with BPS-accredited Graduate Basis for Registration, well prepared for further professional training in psychology or a wide range of careers valuing rigorous, evidence-based thinking.
