Course Description

Overview

Language is at the heart of human intelligence, social interaction, and modern technology. Studying the BSc (Hons) Language Sciences at Lancaster University provides an empirical framework for examining how speech and language are structured, processed in the mind, and applied in real-world contexts. The curriculum blends linguistic theory with quantitative methodology, giving equal emphasis to cognitive science, experimental phonetics, and data-driven analysis. Students investigate the underlying mechanics of human communication, exploring areas such as child language acquisition, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and speech disorders. Supported by world-class eye-tracking laboratories, phonetics facilities, and leading research centers, the program delivers a cutting-edge scientific environment. This degree suits analytically minded students, tech enthusiasts, and curious researchers who wish to gain versatile skills in scientific data analysis, experimental design, and human communication.

What You'll Learn

Core linguistic structures across sound systems, sentence mechanics, meaning, and contextual usage

Experimental techniques in psycholinguistics, neurobiology of language, and cognitive processing

Phonetic analysis tools and acoustic measurement methods using professional laboratory technology

Quantitative research design, statistical modeling, and data management for human subject testing

Child and adult language acquisition processes alongside bilingualism and language development studies

Computational approaches to processing natural language, corpus collection, and text analytics

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will demonstrate a scientific understanding of the cognitive, physical, and computational mechanisms underlying human speech and language. Students develop the ability to critically evaluate theoretical models using empirical data gathered through laboratory experiments and corpus analysis. Alongside theoretical mastery, learners acquire practical skills in operating acoustic software, designing controlled behavioral experiments, and processing complex datasets using statistical programming tools. Through laboratory practicals and independent research projects, students learn to formulate testable hypotheses, interpret quantitative findings, and present scientific results effectively. Ultimately, graduates are equipped to apply language science to technical and societal challenges, allowing them to specialize in speech and language technology, clinical linguistics, data analysis, cognitive science research, or artificial intelligence.
