Course Description

Overview

The BSc in Nursing with Registration as a Mental Health Nurse at King's College London focuses from the very first year on the specialist care of people experiencing mental health challenges. Students explore questions such as how to support people through substance misuse, why person-centred care matters, and how to deliver both psychological and physical care during difficult periods of someone's life. The subject matters because it prepares compassionate, clinically skilled practitioners equipped to support people at some of the most vulnerable points in their lives.

What You'll Learn

  • The foundations of mental health nursing practice, specialised from year one

  • The impact of substance misuse and how to support recovery

  • Person-centred and family-centred approaches to mental health care

  • Mental health nursing across the lifespan, including specialist areas such as child and adolescent mental health and forensic psychiatry

  • Diversity and inclusion in mental health care, with attention to specific populations and their needs

  • Practical clinical skills developed through simulation and clinical placements

  • Optional specialist areas, such as mental health nursing of children and young people

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to assess and respond to a wide range of mental health needs with safe, effective, and compassionate care. They will be equipped to apply psychological, physical, and social care approaches appropriate to people facing serious mental health challenges. Students will develop strong practical skills through extensive clinical placements across NHS and partner organisations, working alongside experienced practitioners in real healthcare settings. These combined clinical and academic competencies prepare graduates to register as a Mental Health Nurse and begin practising confidently across hospital, community, and specialist mental health services.
