Course Description

Overview:

Mathematics with Computer Science at Lancaster University brings together mathematical reasoning and computational thinking, providing a foundation for understanding how abstract concepts can be applied to problems involving data, algorithms and technology. The course develops analytical skills across both disciplines, helping students build a structured approach to solving complex problems and understanding the principles behind modern computing.

What You'll Learn:

  • Core mathematical concepts, methods and techniques used to analyse and solve problems.

  • Fundamental ideas in computer science, including computational approaches and algorithmic thinking.

  • Logical reasoning and structured problem-solving across mathematical and computing contexts.

  • The relationship between mathematical principles and their applications in computer science.

  • Methods for interpreting problems, developing solutions and communicating mathematical or computational ideas clearly.

  • Opportunities to strengthen quantitative, analytical and computational skills through study across both subject areas.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply appropriate mathematical techniques to structured problems and explain the reasoning behind their solutions. They will understand key principles of computer science and use computational thinking to break down problems into manageable stages. Students will also be able to recognise connections between mathematics and computing, select suitable approaches to investigate problems, and present their conclusions using clear and logically organised reasoning. The course will support the development of independent analytical thinking, with students able to evaluate problems systematically and combine mathematical and computational perspectives when working towards solutions.
