Course Description

Overview:

The Electrical and Electronic Engineering BEng at the University of Sheffield introduces students to the principles and applications behind modern electrical and electronic systems. The foundation pathway strengthens essential mathematical, scientific and practical skills before progressing into broader engineering study, connecting theoretical understanding with hands-on problem solving.

What You'll Learn:

  • Fundamental mathematics and physics relevant to electrical and electronic engineering

  • Laboratory methods, practical investigation and engineering problem solving

  • Electrical circuits, electronic devices and digital electronics

  • Electrical machines, drives and power electronics

  • Power systems and the principles behind electrical energy technologies

  • Theoretical concepts alongside practical applications across electrical and electronic engineering

  • Individual and group project work to develop engineering thinking and apply technical knowledge

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical and physical principles to electrical and electronic engineering problems and interpret how core engineering systems operate. They will understand the relationships between circuits, electronic devices, machines, drives, power electronics and wider power systems, providing a broad technical foundation for further study within the discipline. Students will also be able to approach engineering challenges through structured analysis, laboratory investigation and project-based work, combining theoretical concepts with practical application. The foundation stage will enable students to develop the academic and technical preparation needed to progress confidently into degree-level engineering studies, while the BEng will build a more developed understanding across the electrical and electronic engineering field.n Year in Science and Engineering leads to a wide range of undergraduate engineering and science degrees at the University.
