The MA (Hons) History of Art introduces students to the study of art, visual culture, and their relationships with wider historical and social contexts. As part of the School of Culture and Creative Arts at the University of Glasgow, the course develops a foundation for understanding how artworks and visual practices reflect ideas, cultures, and human experience.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyse artworks and visual material using appropriate historical and cultural perspectives. They will develop the ability to interpret evidence critically, connect artistic developments with broader social and cultural contexts, and communicate informed arguments about art and visual culture. Students will also gain a deeper understanding of how the study of art contributes to wider knowledge of society, culture, and human nature, while building transferable analytical and research skills relevant to study within the social sciences and humanities.
