Course Description

Overview

The Mechanical Engineering BEng at the University of Sheffield develops a strong understanding of the principles used to analyse, design and improve mechanical systems. The foundation stage establishes the mathematical, physical and engineering knowledge needed to progress into degree-level study, while later study connects theory with practical engineering problems.

What You'll Learn

  • Introduction to engineering and the role of engineering principles in solving technical problems.

  • Foundation mathematics, including algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, probability and numerical methods.

  • Core physics covering mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermal physics, waves, optics and properties of matter.

  • Fundamental mechanical engineering science, including statics, solid mechanics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, gases and thermofluids.

  • Manufacturing processes and the relationship between engineering materials, their properties and production methods.

  • Engineering design through analytical, computational and practical approaches.

  • Fluid mechanics and heat transfer, including the analysis of thermal and fluid systems.

  • Professional engineering practice, with attention to teamwork, communication, ethical considerations and sustainability.

  • Independent investigation involving the application of engineering knowledge to a complex, open-ended problem.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical and scientific principles to mechanical engineering problems and interpret the behaviour of mechanical systems. They will be able to analyse stresses, motion, fluids, thermal processes, materials and manufacturing considerations using appropriate engineering methods. Students will also develop the ability to approach design challenges systematically, combine theoretical and practical evidence, and evaluate possible solutions. Through project-based and investigative work, they will strengthen problem-solving, communication, collaboration and project-management skills. They will be prepared to assess engineering decisions in relation to technical, ethical, economic and environmental factors, and to present engineering findings clearly in appropriate written, oral or technical forms.ndation Year in Science and Engineering leads to a wide range of undergraduate engineering and science degrees at the University.
