Course Description

Overview:

The Social Sciences BA (Hons) provides an interdisciplinary foundation for exploring how societies are organised, how people interact, and how social institutions shape contemporary life. At the University of Sheffield, the course develops a broad understanding of social issues while building the analytical and academic skills needed for further study across the social sciences.

What You'll Learn:

  • Core concepts and approaches used to investigate society, culture, institutions, and human behaviour.

  • Interdisciplinary perspectives that connect different areas of the social sciences.

  • Methods for examining social questions and interpreting evidence.

  • Academic skills including critical reading, structured argument, research, and effective communication.

  • Contemporary social issues through multiple disciplinary viewpoints.

  • Ways of evaluating theories, evidence, and competing interpretations of social phenomena.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate a broad and connected understanding of key social science ideas and how different disciplines can be used to examine complex issues. They will be able to assess information critically, distinguish between different perspectives, and use appropriate evidence to develop reasoned arguments. Students will also be able to apply academic research and communication skills to investigate questions about society, present their findings clearly, and engage thoughtfully with differing interpretations. The course provides a foundation for approaching social questions systematically, recognising relationships between social structures and individual experiences, and developing an informed understanding of the factors that influence contemporary societies.
