Course Description

Overview

The BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering explores the science and engineering principles used to transform raw materials into useful products and manage industrial processes. Students combine chemistry, mathematics, physics, and engineering concepts to understand how processes are designed, controlled, analysed, and improved.

What You'll Learn

  • Core principles of chemistry, mathematics, physics, and engineering

  • Material and energy balances in chemical processes

  • Thermodynamics and the behaviour of chemical systems

  • Fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mass transfer

  • Chemical reaction engineering and process kinetics

  • Process design, modelling, and simulation

  • Process control, measurement, and instrumentation

  • Materials, safety, environmental considerations, and process efficiency

  • Engineering methods for analysing and improving complex processes

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply chemical engineering principles to the analysis and development of industrial processes. They will understand how matter, energy, fluids, heat, chemical reactions, and separation processes interact within engineered systems. Students will be able to use mathematical and computational methods to model processes, assess performance, and investigate potential improvements. They will also develop the ability to consider process control, safety, materials, environmental factors, and efficiency when evaluating engineering solutions. The course will enable students to identify and investigate technical problems systematically, interpret relevant data, compare possible approaches, and communicate engineering conclusions clearly. Students will gain an integrated understanding of how chemical processes can be designed, operated, controlled, and evaluated using scientific and engineering knowledge.
