Course Description

Overview:

The Architecture BA at the University of Sheffield introduces students to the principles, processes, and creative practices involved in architectural design. The course provides a foundation for exploring how buildings and spaces are conceived, developed, and communicated, while encouraging students to consider the relationship between design, people, and the built environment.

What You'll Learn:

  • Core concepts and principles of architecture and spatial design

  • Approaches to developing architectural ideas from initial concepts to considered proposals

  • Methods for exploring form, space, materials, and the relationship between buildings and their surroundings

  • Visual and practical techniques used to represent and communicate design ideas

  • Ways to analyse architectural examples and draw informed conclusions from observation and research

  • The role of creative thinking, critical reflection, and problem-solving within architectural practice

  • Considerations that influence the design of buildings and environments, including human use and context

  • Processes for presenting and explaining architectural proposals through appropriate forms of communication

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will have developed an understanding of fundamental architectural principles and the factors that shape the design of buildings and spaces. They will be able to investigate architectural ideas, evaluate different approaches, and use creative and analytical thinking to develop their own design responses. Students will also be able to communicate architectural concepts clearly using suitable visual and practical methods, while reflecting on how their proposals respond to people, place, and the wider built environment.
