Course Description

Overview

Analyzing the formal mechanisms of human communication alongside the historical evolution and social impact of the English language provides a powerful foundation for understanding human interaction and digital discourse. The BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics at University of Leeds offers a comprehensive joint study of language structures, cognitive processing, and linguistic application. Delivered collaboratively within the School of English and the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, the curriculum combines empirical scientific methods with socio-cultural research. Students investigate core linguistic fields—such as phonetics, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics—while exploring the history, variation, and global dissemination of English. The degree utilizes specialized phonetics laboratories, speech analysis software, and computerized linguistic corpora. This pathway is ideal for analytical, detail-oriented thinkers who wish to combine scientific data analysis with qualitative textual critique to solve communication challenges across digital media, technology, and professional sectors.

What You'll Learn

  • Fundamental scientific techniques for analyzing speech acoustics, phonetics, and grammatical structures

  • Structural mechanics of English, including historical evolution, dialectology, and global varieties

  • Psycholinguistics, child language acquisition, cognitive processing, and neurological foundations of speech

  • Meaning interpretation, formal semantics, discourse analysis, and pragmatic frameworks in social context

  • Socio-linguistics, exploring language variation across gender, social class, ethnicity, and digital platforms

  • Quantitative research design, corpus analysis, statistical evaluation, and data collection methodologies

  • Specialist option modules covering computational linguistics, media discourse, stylistics, and forensic linguistics

  • Independent empirical research dissertation involving original speech data collection, corpus analysis, or field investigation

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will possess an in-depth understanding of theoretical linguistics, formal speech systems, and the structural variations of the English language. They will demonstrate the ability to analyze complex linguistic datasets, perform acoustic speech evaluations using industry-standard software, and critique competing models of language processing. Students acquire strong technical competencies in empirical research design, qualitative discourse analysis, and quantitative data modeling through laboratory sessions and seminars. Furthermore, learners master the capability to articulate complex linguistic findings clearly and persuasively across written, oral, and digital formats. Through specialized option pathways and a major final-year empirical project, scholars cultivate the analytical precision required to excel in speech and language technology, publishing, media, corporate communications, marketing, education, computational linguistics, or postgraduate academic study.
