Course Description

Overview

The BA (Hons) English and German at the University of Bristol brings together the study of English literature and language with German language, literature, and culture. The foundation stage strengthens academic and linguistic abilities, preparing students to explore texts, ideas, and cultural contexts across both subject areas.

What You'll Learn

  • English literature across a range of periods, genres, authors, and cultural settings.

  • Critical methods for interpreting literary works and developing evidence-based arguments.

  • English language, including its structures, development, and different forms of use.

  • German language skills across speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

  • German literature and cultural expression through texts and other materials.

  • Historical, social, and cultural contexts that influence English- and German-language works.

  • Comparative approaches to literature, language, and cultural studies.

  • Academic research, writing, independent study, and effective use of evidence.

  • Analytical, communication, critical-thinking, and intercultural skills.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to critically analyze literary and cultural materials from English- and German-speaking contexts and develop well-supported interpretations. They will build proficiency in German and communicate with increasing confidence across written and spoken contexts. Students will understand how literature and language reflect and respond to historical, social, and cultural circumstances, and will be able to identify meaningful connections between English and German traditions. They will also develop the ability to undertake independent research, assess sources, construct coherent academic arguments, and present ideas clearly. The combined programme will strengthen students' linguistic awareness, cultural understanding, and analytical abilities while encouraging them to approach texts and ideas from multiple perspectives.
