Course Description

Overview

Communicating fluently across cultures takes both genuine language skill and a real understanding of how language itself works, from its structure to its social meaning. The BA (Hons) Linguistics with German at the University of York combines high-level German language study, taught almost entirely in German, with core linguistics modules exploring syntax, phonetics, semantics and sociolinguistics, drawing on research ranked first in the UK for quality. Students can begin German from scratch or continue from A level, learning from largely native-speaking staff within a department home to a dedicated e-lab and a multilingual interpreting suite. The course suits students who want genuine transcultural fluency alongside analytical rigour, with the option to extend into a four-year degree including a year abroad.

What You'll Learn

  • German language, culture and society, taught almost entirely in the target language

  • Core linguistic theory, including syntax, phonetics and phonology

  • How language is structured, how it evolves and how it is used within society

  • Understanding of German-speaking cultures and societies from a transnational perspective

  • Specialist linguistics options such as sociolinguistics, language acquisition or forensic phonetics

  • Advanced German modules focused on in-depth critical research and analysis

  • Translation methodology and practice, alongside independent language-based research

  • The option to extend your studies with a year abroad at a partner university

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to critically evaluate linguistic phenomena and the societies and cultures of German-speaking countries, drawing on key research perspectives and real language data. They will be equipped to apply qualitative and quantitative research methods to gain a rounded understanding of language across cognitive and social contexts. Through creative and critical engagement with transnational issues, students will develop the ability to negotiate and solve problems arising from cultural and linguistic diversity. Graduates will leave as confident multilingual communicators, able to mediate concepts across cultures and lead collaborative projects, well prepared for careers in translation, education, international business, government or research.
