Course Description

Overview:

The English Literature BA foundation course develops an informed understanding of literary texts, genres, and critical approaches. It provides a structured introduction to studying literature while building the academic skills needed to interpret texts thoughtfully and communicate ideas with clarity. At Lancaster University, the foundation stage supports progression into further study of English literature and related humanities subjects.

What You'll Learn:

  • Close reading and interpretation of literary works across different forms and genres.

  • Key concepts and methods used in literary criticism and analysis.

  • Approaches to understanding how texts reflect and engage with historical, cultural, and social contexts.

  • Academic research skills, including finding, evaluating, and using relevant sources.

  • Techniques for constructing clear arguments and supporting interpretations with textual evidence.

  • Written and spoken communication appropriate to university-level humanities study.

  • Independent learning and critical thinking through engagement with literary questions and debates.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyse literary texts using appropriate critical concepts and methods. They will understand how literary works can be interpreted in relation to their form, context, and wider ideas, while recognising that different approaches can produce varied readings. Students will also be able to develop coherent arguments, select relevant evidence, and present their ideas effectively in academic writing and discussion. The course further enables students to apply research strategies when investigating literary topics and to assess sources critically. Through these skills, students will establish a stronger foundation for more advanced study in English literature, with greater confidence in independent analysis, structured reasoning, and academic communication.
