Course Description

Overview:

The Film and Creative Writing BA Foundation pathway develops a broad understanding of film, storytelling, and creative practice while preparing students for further undergraduate study. At Lancaster University, students can explore how visual media and written narratives communicate ideas, cultures, and experiences through critical study and creative work.

What You'll Learn:

  • Foundations of academic study within business, humanities, and social science disciplines.

  • Approaches to analysing films, stories, and other forms of cultural expression.

  • Principles of creative writing, including the development and refinement of original ideas.

  • Ways that narrative, character, structure, and style shape written and visual storytelling.

  • Critical reading and interpretation of texts and media.

  • Academic communication, research, and presentation skills relevant to university-level study.

  • Methods for developing ideas, evaluating information, and constructing clear arguments.

  • The relationship between creative practice, cultural contexts, and critical analysis.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the foundation study, students will be able to approach creative and academic material with greater confidence and critical awareness. They will be able to interpret films and written works, identify how narrative and creative techniques influence meaning, and discuss their observations using appropriate academic conventions. Students will also have strengthened their ability to research topics, assess information, organise ideas, and communicate conclusions clearly in written and spoken forms. Through creative activities, they will develop greater awareness of how ideas can be transformed into structured written work and how creative choices affect an audience's interpretation. The foundation stage will also provide a stronger academic basis for progressing to undergraduate-level study in Film and Creative Writing.
