Why don't democracies go to war with each other, and why do so many young people avoid voting? Questions like these sit at the heart of political science, revealing connections between everyday life and power that aren't always obvious. The BA (Hons) Politics at the University of Essex provides thorough training across political science, based within the Department of Government, ranked 2nd in the UK for research outputs in politics and international studies. Students train to move from opinion to evidence, questioning assumptions and learning to answer the "how do you know?" question, with the option to work alongside staff on live research instead of a traditional dissertation. The course suits students who enjoy debate, complexity and evidence-based thinking, with notable alumni including MPs and a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Learning Outcomes
