Overview
Artificial Intelligence, studied within the Bachelor of Advanced Computer Science (Honours) at The University of Western Australia, prepares students to analyse, assess, design and build intelligent software systems. It combines a rigorous computing foundation with close attention to the ethical, legal and philosophical questions that AI raises. As organisations in many sectors adopt machine learning to improve how they operate, graduates who can both build and critically evaluate these systems are increasingly valuable.
What You'll Learn
Programming and computational thinking, from Python and object-oriented design to systems programming
Data structures, algorithms and discrete structures, followed by advanced algorithm design
Knowledge representation and intelligent agents
Machine learning and deep learning
Specialist areas such as natural language processing, computer vision and computational modelling
Software engineering practice, including agile web development and professional computing
Ethics, moral theory and the philosophy of AI, including questions about machine minds
An honours research project in which students carry out research and communicate their results to specialist and general audiences
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to design and implement a range of contemporary AI techniques, ranging from structured knowledge modelling to deep learning. They will apply legal, ethical, social and philosophical considerations when deploying these technologies in real settings. Students will also work productively as team members and leaders on practical AI projects, and extend their knowledge through research, experimentation and analysis. Graduates will be equipped to contribute to organisations and communities by leading the thoughtful integration of AI into existing processes.
