Course Description

Overview

The Bachelor of Agricultural Science at The University of Western Australia examines how science can help agriculture meet growing demand for food, fibre and fuel. Students explore how population growth, a changing climate and limited land and freshwater resources shape farming systems. They also learn how research and technology can support production that is sustainable, profitable and ethical. The course is taught by active research scientists with strong connections to industry, and it matters because reliable food production underpins communities and economies worldwide.

What You'll Learn

  • The pressures on global food supply and the role science plays in addressing them

  • Plant and animal biology, and how plants function and grow

  • Soil science and the interactions between soils and plants

  • Genetics and the principles of inheritance

  • Pasture and livestock systems, including the principles of responsible animal production

  • Crops and cropping systems

  • Agricultural economics and marketing, including grain marketing

  • Data analysis and scientific communication, alongside field trips to farms and research sites

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain how key plants, animals and other organisms respond to climate, soils and farm management practices. They will understand how the parts of a farming system connect, from soil and water to crops, livestock and economics, and apply that understanding to improve production, profitability and environmental performance. Students will also be able to weigh the economic dimensions of farm decisions, including marketing. They will analyse data, think critically about agricultural problems and communicate scientific findings clearly to varied audiences. Graduates will be prepared to contribute to a sustainable agricultural industry through evidence-based solutions.
