Overview
Data Science at The University of Western Australia is a Bachelor of Science course that combines data analysis with scientific computing. It teaches students to turn raw information into insight that can guide decisions in areas such as health, finance, marketing and engineering. Organisations now collect data in ever larger volumes and at greater pace, so the ability to process and interpret it has become an essential skill.
What You'll Learn
Programming in Python and the principles of computational thinking
Designing and managing relational databases, and building data warehouses to organise large collections of information
Statistics for science, including the analysis of experiments and observational data
Statistical learning and Bayesian approaches to computing and statistics
Gathering and preparing data, analysing it, presenting it visually and drawing sound conclusions
Agile web development and professional computing practice
The ethical questions raised by digital technology, explored through an introduction to moral philosophy
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to manage the full process of working with data, from gathering and preparing it through to analysis, visualisation and clear interpretation. They will apply statistical and computational methods to real problems, and combine emerging technologies to build systems that serve scientific, engineering and business needs. Students will also be able to develop software that people can rely on and use easily, work within professional and ethical standards, and communicate findings in a way that others can act on. These capabilities pair well with studies in other disciplines across the university.
