Course Description

Overview

Veterinary nursing and technology sit at the centre of modern animal healthcare, pairing compassion with advanced clinical skill. The BVetTech (Hons) Veterinary Technology at Adelaide University is a clinically focused program that prepares students to deliver high-level nursing care to many kinds of animals, from cats, dogs and horses to farm animals, wildlife and exotic pets. Teaching draws on a world-class veterinary health centre and on simulated settings such as a clinical skills centre, so that techniques are practised before they are used on patients. Students learn to operate anaesthetic, radiography and dental equipment, guided by experienced nursing and technology educators, clinical staff and researchers. Industry and clinical placements run through the degree and total more than 600 hours, giving students a close view of how the profession works in practice. Collaboration with animal scientists, behaviourists and veterinarians broadens the learning experience further. The course suits empathetic, practical animal lovers who enjoy teamwork and problem solving, and it prepares them for work in clinics, hospitals and other animal care settings.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, graduates will understand animal health from normal structure and function through to disease processes, infection, treatment and prevention. They will be able to apply this knowledge when providing nursing care to patients with varied health needs, including those in surgery, anaesthesia, emergency and critical care, dentistry, exotic and wildlife medicine. Practical training develops competence in diagnostic imaging, laboratory analysis, medication administration, fluid therapy and the safe use of specialised clinical equipment. Students also gain a sound grasp of animal behaviour, welfare and ethics, and an appreciation of One Health, including diseases that can pass between animals and people. Evidence-based thinking and teamwork skills allow them to contribute effectively within a veterinary care team and to communicate with animal owners. Extensive placements build the confidence and professional judgement needed to work independently, and elective choices let students shape their expertise toward areas such as nutrition, wildlife or animal law.
