Course Description

Overview

Designing the aircraft and spacecraft of the future demands a broad set of engineering skills, spanning aerodynamics, materials, control systems and design. The BEng Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol builds this expertise through a combination of advanced theory and hands-on practical work, applied to areas such as fixed and rotary wing aircraft, spacecraft and space missions. Based in a city recognised as a UK hub for aerospace engineering, the course benefits from strong industry connections coordinated through an Industrial Liaison Office throughout all three years. It suits students who want a technically demanding, broadly based engineering education, working closely with leading researchers and gaining direct exposure to industry throughout their studies.

What You'll Learn

  • Aerodynamics, structures and materials, dynamics and control, and systems and design

  • Application of engineering principles to fixed and rotary wing aircraft, spacecraft and space missions

  • Core engineering foundations shared with other engineering disciplines in the first year

  • Specialist aerospace topics including space systems engineering in the second year

  • Teamwork and presentation skills through a group design-build-test project

  • Advanced topics such as computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis and feedback control in the final year

  • An individual research project tackling an open-ended engineering problem

  • Engagement with nearby aerospace companies through an Industrial Liaison Office

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core engineering principles across aerodynamics, structures, materials, dynamics and control to solve real aerospace problems. They will be equipped to use advanced computational and analytical techniques, including computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis, to model and evaluate complex engineering systems. Through a group design-build-test project and an individual research project, students will develop practical teamwork, technical and problem-solving skills, working on genuinely open-ended engineering challenges alongside leading researchers. Graduates will leave with a broad, technically rigorous grounding in aerospace engineering, along with direct industry exposure, preparing them for further study or a career addressing complex engineering problems in aerospace and related sectors.
