Course Description

Overview

Artificial intelligence now sits at the forefront of technological change, and learning to build it responsibly requires both strong theoretical foundations and genuine hands-on practice. The BEng (Hons) Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bristol offers a genuinely interdisciplinary route into the subject, combining core AI principles and machine learning with the ethical, legal and societal questions the technology raises. Students engage directly with industrial partners across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, energy, motorsport and finance, supported by an industrial mentor from early in the course. The course suits those who want to become skilled, responsible AI practitioners, equipped to apply machine learning to real, open-ended problems across diverse domains.

What You'll Learn

  • Core concepts and principles of AI, including its ethical and societal implications, in the first two years

  • Programming, algorithms and large-scale data management, including cloud-based tools

  • The mathematics underpinning AI, including linear algebra, probability and information theory

  • Modern machine learning approaches such as deep learning and reinforcement learning

  • Practical problem-solving across domains including robotics, health, finance, manufacturing and design

  • Real-world project work, both individually and in teams

  • Direct engagement with industrial partners and an industrial mentor

  • Critical thinking around fairness, responsibility and the risks associated with AI

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to design, build and refine AI systems, applying a strong mathematical and theoretical understanding of machine learning algorithms and their limitations. They will be equipped to programme and manage data at scale, and to apply modern machine learning techniques across diverse real-world domains. Through individual and team-based project work on open-ended problems, students will develop practical, professional-standard problem-solving and collaboration skills. Graduates will leave with the technical expertise and ethical awareness to work as responsible AI practitioners, well prepared to contribute to the wider adoption of AI across industry and society.
