Course Description

Overview:

The BEng (Hons) Biomedical Engineering at the University of Glasgow combines engineering principles with biology, medicine, and the life sciences to address challenges in healthcare. The course develops an interdisciplinary understanding of how technologies, devices, and engineering methods can be applied to medical and biological systems.

What You'll Learn:

  • Fundamental engineering concepts including mathematics, mechanics, electronics, materials, statics, dynamics, and thermodynamics.

  • Core biomedical engineering principles, including biomolecular processes, biomaterials, and biological systems from cellular to whole-body scales.

  • Biomedical engineering applications such as biomechanics, biological fluid mechanics, medical imaging, instrumentation, control, and modelling.

  • Engineering design, laboratory practice, technical skills, and individual and group project work.

  • Specialist areas including tissue and cell engineering, ultrasound technology, digital signal processing, robotics, finite element analysis, and engineering optimisation.

  • Business planning, entrepreneurship, and the regulatory considerations associated with medical devices.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply engineering concepts to biomedical and healthcare-related problems and connect knowledge from engineering, biology, and medicine. They will be able to analyse biological and biomedical systems using appropriate mathematical, computational, experimental, and engineering approaches. Students will also develop the ability to design and evaluate potential biomedical solutions, interpret experimental and technical data, and communicate their findings through individual and collaborative project work. The course further supports an understanding of how medical technologies are developed within technical, ethical, regulatory, and commercial contexts, enabling students to make informed engineering decisions when addressing real-world biomedical challenges.
