Course Description

Overview

Chemical engineers turn raw materials into the products and processes modern life depends on, from new medicines to low-carbon energy systems. The BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham builds a strong foundation in thermodynamics, reactors and heat and mass transfer, with teaching directly informed by the department's own cutting-edge research. Students benefit from unique facilities including the Birmingham Centre for Cryogenic Energy Storage, the UK's first research facility of its kind, alongside close industry ties and a final-year design project aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The course suits students who want a technically rigorous, IChemE-accredited engineering education with genuine relevance to healthcare, energy and manufacturing.

What You'll Learn

  • Reaction, equilibria and thermodynamics, alongside chemistry and materials science

  • Transport phenomena and process design fundamentals

  • Reactors, catalysis and sustainable process engineering

  • Mass, heat and momentum transport

  • Process integration, unit operations and systems design and control

  • Specialist optional areas such as food engineering, healthcare technologies or petrochemical engineering

  • Team-based project work reflecting real industry practice

  • An industry-relevant Design Project applying your full range of skills in the final year

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core chemical engineering principles across thermodynamics, reactors and transport phenomena to design safe, efficient industrial processes. They will be equipped to use advanced process design and systems control techniques to solve real engineering problems relevant to healthcare, energy and manufacturing. Through team-based project work and an industry-linked Design Project, students will develop strong technical, collaborative and problem-solving skills mirroring professional practice. Graduates will leave with an IChemE-accredited, industry-relevant chemical engineering education, well prepared for a career addressing sustainability challenges across the energy, healthcare and manufacturing sectors.
