Course Description

Overview

Transforming raw materials into valuable, sustainable products safely and efficiently is central to meeting global energy, environmental, and manufacturing demands. The BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering at University of Nottingham provides a comprehensive grounding in transport phenomena, reaction engineering, thermodynamics, and process design. Students explore fundamental physical and chemical principles while tackling contemporary challenges such as carbon capture, waste minimization, and renewable resource optimization. Teaching combines interactive lectures, process simulation labs, and practical pilot-scale equipment testing in dedicated chemical engineering facilities. The curriculum emphasizes rigorous quantitative analysis, environmental sustainability, and collaborative plant design projects. This degree suits mathematically inclined problem-solvers eager to innovate across sustainable processing and resource management industries. Graduates emerge equipped with the technical precision and system-level analytical skills required for rewarding careers in pharmaceuticals, energy, food processing, environmental engineering, and technical consultancy.

What You'll Learn

Thermodynamic principles, fluid mechanics, and heat and mass transport phenomena

Chemical reaction engineering, reactor design, and industrial catalysis methods

Process design principles, flow sheeting, and industrial safety management protocols

Separation processes including distillation, absorption, membrane technology, and extraction

Process dynamics, control systems engineering, and computer simulation techniques

Sustainable process engineering, waste reduction, and techno-economic evaluation

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this program, students will have acquired a robust technical understanding of chemical processing, reaction kinetics, and transport phenomena across industrial scales. Learners will possess the capability to critically evaluate complex process flow sheets, apply mathematical modeling, and utilize industry-standard simulation tools to design efficient and safe chemical plant systems. Through hands-on pilot plant experiments, computational modeling, and collaborative design projects, students develop advanced data analysis, risk assessment, and technical communication skills. Furthermore, graduates gain the technical expertise needed to specialize in fields such as biochemical engineering, clean energy transitions, or advanced materials processing, establishing a firm base for professional engineering charter ship or postgraduate research.
