Overview

From bridges and buildings to water systems and renewable energy infrastructure, civil engineers shape the physical world in ways that directly affect how communities and ecosystems function. The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering at the University of Bristol combines rigorous theoretical study with hands-on design work, taught by academics active in current research and supported by advanced facilities, including one of Europe's most sophisticated earthquake shaking tables. The course builds a strong grounding in engineering, mathematics, structures, and soil and fluid mechanics, before moving into more specialised design and a major individual research project. It suits students drawn to creative, real-world problem-solving who want to develop the technical and professional skills needed to design sustainable structures and infrastructure.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core engineering principles across structures, geotechnics and fluid mechanics to design safe, sustainable solutions to real-world problems. They will be equipped to use coding, surveying and computational modelling skills alongside sound engineering judgement in practical design contexts. Through hands-on projects, including structural design work and a major individual research project, students will develop strong technical, analytical and communication skills, alongside professional capabilities such as project management and risk analysis. Graduates will leave with a well-rounded, practically grounded civil engineering education, prepared for further study or a career designing the infrastructure and systems that support human and environmental wellbeing.

Requirements

Kuwait: High School / Shahadat Al-Thanawiya Al-A'ama (General Secondary Education Certificate) is not accepted for direct undergraduate entry. Completion of a recognized foundation course (or A-Levels / equivalent qualification) is required
UKVI IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 (or approved SELT equivalent)
Minimum overall average of 55% (60 academic credits) in the Foundation Programme required to progress to Year 1 of the Bachelor's degree
Completion of the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) / English Language Module within the Foundation Programme with a minimum score of 63%
Award of IFP with 55 overall (80 credits) with 55 in Foundations of Physics and 60 average across Techniques in Mathematics and Foundations and Applications of Calculus & 63 overall in English for Academic Communication in STEM
