Course Description

Overview

The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering at the University of Bristol develops an understanding of the principles used to design, analyse, construct, and maintain the built environment. The foundation stage establishes essential knowledge in mathematics, physics, and engineering, preparing students for more advanced technical and practical study.

What You'll Learn

  • Engineering mathematics, including algebra, calculus, vectors, and mathematical modelling.

  • Structural mechanics, forces, loads, and the behaviour of engineered structures.

  • Properties and performance of construction and engineering materials.

  • Geotechnical engineering and the behaviour of soils and foundations.

  • Fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and the movement of water through engineered systems.

  • Structural analysis and principles of designing safe and efficient structures.

  • Construction methods, engineering design, and project-based problem solving.

  • Environmental considerations and the relationship between engineering and natural systems.

  • Surveying, experimentation, data analysis, teamwork, research, and technical communication.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical, scientific, and engineering principles to civil engineering problems. They will understand how structures, materials, soils, fluids, and environmental conditions influence the design and performance of civil engineering systems. Students will develop the ability to analyze engineering problems, assess design requirements, and use appropriate methods to develop and evaluate potential solutions. They will also gain practical experience in measurement, experimentation, data interpretation, and technical analysis. Through theoretical, practical, and design-focused study, students will strengthen their problem-solving, research, teamwork, and communication skills while developing an integrated understanding of the principles that underpin civil engineering and the built environment.
