Course Description

Overview

Smart devices now shape how people live and work, and building them depends on engineers who understand both the hardware and the software behind them. The BEng (Hons) Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Liverpool combines the core elements of electronic engineering with computer science, the discipline underlying all software development. Graduates gain fluency in the languages of both fields, which lets them bridge the gap between software systems and the physical world. The course is delivered jointly by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics and the School of Computer Science and Informatics, with teaching from research-active staff, most of them internationally recognised. Students spend one day a week on practical work in the computing and electronics laboratories in the first year, and the emphasis on project work grows through to the final year. The degree is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and students can add a year in industry or a year of study abroad. It suits students who want breadth across electronics and computing together with a specialist, project-driven finish.

What You’ll Learn

  • Electronic circuits, electrical systems and digital and integrated electronics design

  • Programming, object-oriented programming and data structures

  • Mathematics for electronic engineers

  • Software engineering fundamentals and database development

  • Signals and systems, communication systems and control systems

  • Digital electronics and microprocessor systems

  • Advanced topics such as low power computer architecture, C++ application development and cloud computing

  • Specialist options in areas such as power systems, photonics, integrated circuits and wireless communications

  • An extended individual project in either electronic engineering or computer science

  •

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core principles of electronic engineering and computer science together, designing systems that link software with real-world hardware. They will be equipped to use industry-standard tools, technologies and working methods to take a project from conception through design and implementation to operation. Through extended team work and an individual final-year project, students will develop critical thinking, teamwork and practical problem-solving skills with a clear awareness of how theory applies in practice. Optional modules in areas such as power systems, photonics and wireless communications let students deepen their specialism in their final year. Graduates will leave with an IET-accredited, broad technical foundation, well prepared for careers in engineering, technology and research, or for further study.
