Overview
The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol develops an understanding of the principles used to design, analyze, and improve mechanical systems and technologies. The foundation stage builds essential knowledge in mathematics, physics, and engineering, preparing students for more advanced technical and practical study.
What You'll Learn
Engineering mathematics, including algebra, calculus, vectors, and mathematical modelling.
Mechanics, forces, motion, energy, and the behaviour of mechanical systems.
Materials science and the properties and performance of engineering materials.
Thermodynamics, heat transfer, and energy conversion.
Fluid mechanics and the behaviour of liquids and gases.
Engineering design, including developing, evaluating, and refining mechanical solutions.
Manufacturing processes and approaches to producing engineered components.
Computer-aided design, computational methods, and engineering analysis.
Laboratory work, experimentation, data analysis, teamwork, research, and technical communication.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical and physical principles to analyze mechanical and engineering problems. They will understand how forces, materials, energy, fluids, and thermal processes influence the performance of mechanical systems and components. Students will develop the ability to approach engineering design systematically, consider technical requirements, and evaluate possible solutions using appropriate analytical and computational methods. They will also gain practical experience in experimentation, measurement, data analysis, and the interpretation of engineering results. Through theoretical, practical, and design-based study, students will strengthen their problem-solving, technical communication, teamwork, and research skills while developing an integrated understanding of mechanical engineering principles and their application to engineered systems.
