Overview

Mechanical engineers shape the machines, systems and technologies that keep modern society running, and training in the discipline demands a genuinely broad understanding of engineering science and practice. The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol is built around four core areas, design and manufacture, dynamics and control, materials, and energy and fluid flow, giving students a rounded technical foundation. The first two years establish shared fundamentals through lectures, laboratories and hands-on modelling and manufacturing projects, before the third year moves into complex, open-ended engineering challenges tackled through a major group project. The course suits students who want a well-balanced mechanical engineering education combining strong theoretical grounding with genuine creative and collaborative problem-solving.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core mechanical engineering principles across design, dynamics, materials and energy systems to solve real engineering problems. They will be equipped to use practical modelling and manufacturing skills developed through hands-on laboratory and design work. Through a major, open-ended group project in the final year, students will strengthen their ability to collaborate, think creatively and make significant individual contributions to complex engineering challenges. Graduates will leave with a broad, well-balanced mechanical engineering education and the technical and professional skills needed for further study or a career shaping the engineering solutions of the future.

Requirements

Kuwait: High School / Shahadat Al-Thanawiya Al-A'ama (General Secondary Education Certificate) is not accepted for direct undergraduate entry. Completion of a recognized foundation course (or A-Levels / equivalent qualification) is required
UKVI IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 (or approved SELT equivalent)
Minimum overall average of 65% (60 academic credits) in the Foundation Programme required to progress to Year 1 of the Bachelor's degree
Completion of the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) / English Language Module within the Foundation Programme with a minimum score of 63%
Award of IFP with 65 overall (80 credits) with 60 in Foundations of Physics and 65 average across Techniques in Mathematics and Foundations and Applications of Calculus & 63 overall in English for Academic Communication in STEM
