Overview

Becoming a safe, competent doctor takes years of integrated academic and clinical training, learning to apply biomedical science directly to real patient care from the very first term. The BM BS (Hons) Medicine at Brighton and Sussex Medical School is delivered through a partnership between the University of Brighton, the University of Sussex and NHS Trusts across the Surrey and Sussex region. Students progress from foundational systems-based science through increasingly specialist clinical rotations, training in purpose-built anatomy and clinical science laboratories alongside simulated consultation rooms. The course suits students committed to a demanding five-year route into medicine, with GMC quality assurance supporting progression toward provisional registration and further training as a GP or consultant.

• The structure and function of the human body, including anatomy, physiology and cellular pathology

• The cardiovascular, respiratory, alimentary and excretory systems and their associated diseases

• Clinical history taking, physical examination and communication skills developed in classroom and placement settings

• The nervous, musculoskeletal, immune, reproductive and endocrine systems

• Ward-based clinical practice across medicine, surgery, elderly care and psychiatry

• Safe prescribing and the scientific basis of drug treatment

• Specialist clinical rotations spanning paediatrics, oncology, obstetrics and neurology

• An individual research project, alongside a final-year clinical elective and apprenticeship-style placements

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core biomedical science to the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients, drawing on integrated knowledge built progressively from foundational science through to specialist practice. They will be equipped to communicate professionally and compassionately across a wide range of clinical settings, having developed these skills through direct patient contact from the first year onward. Through an individual research project and extensive clinical rotations, students will build the practical judgement, prescribing safety and diagnostic skills needed for professional practice. Graduates will be eligible for provisional registration with the General Medical Council, ready to complete foundation training and pursue further postgraduate training as a GP or consultant across a wide range of clinical specialities.
