Course Description

Overview

This foundation-level programme prepares students for progression into an undergraduate degree exploring the physics of celestial bodies and the wider universe. Delivered at University College London by experienced UCL tutors, it builds the mathematical rigour and physical science understanding required for advanced study in astrophysics. The programme strengthens academic English and quantitative reasoning alongside core scientific knowledge, equipping students for a highly analytical field.

What You'll Learn

  • Physics principles studied alongside mathematics, covering mechanics, forces, and the behaviour of physical systems

  • Rigorous mathematical techniques that provide a quantitative and analytical basis for scientific study

  • Academic English skills tailored to scientific communication and technical writing

  • Broader scientific context, connecting theoretical study to real-world and observational applications

  • Complementary science subjects that reinforce analytical thinking and problem-solving

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this programme, students will be able to apply mathematical and physical principles to solve structured, quantitative problems relevant to astrophysical study. They will have developed strong analytical reasoning and the ability to interpret scientific data with precision, alongside the academic communication skills needed to present technical ideas clearly. These outcomes will prepare graduates to enter the first year of a BSc Astrophysics degree with the mathematical foundation and scientific grounding the programme demands.
