Course Description

Overview

This foundation-level programme prepares students for progression into an undergraduate degree centred on the theory and practice of computing. Delivered by Queen Mary University's academic staff, it builds the mathematical reasoning and scientific grounding needed to succeed in a discipline defined by logical problem-solving and technical precision. The course bridges secondary education and the analytical demands of university-level computer science.

What You'll Learn

  • Mathematical foundations, including further mathematics, that underpin computational and algorithmic thinking

  • Core principles of physical science relevant to engineering and technical disciplines

  • Foundations of chemical science as part of a broad scientific base

  • Introductory engineering concepts linking theoretical knowledge with applied problem-solving

  • Scientific and technical communication skills for presenting ideas with clarity

  • Study approaches suited to a fast-moving, highly quantitative field

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this programme, students will be able to apply mathematical and logical reasoning to solve structured, technical problems central to computer science. They will have developed a solid grasp of scientific and engineering principles that inform computational study, along with the communication skills needed to convey technical ideas effectively. These outcomes will prepare graduates to enter the first year of a BSc in Computer Science with the analytical foundation and study discipline the degree requires.
