Course Description

Overview

This programme at the University of Leeds combines core computer science foundations with specialist study of artificial intelligence, an area increasingly central to computer games, web search, biometric systems, and much of modern IT. Students build fundamental skills in programming, mathematics, network architectures, and project management, alongside specialist AI topics such as machine learning, image analysis, and text analytics.

What You'll Learn

  • Foundations of programming and the mathematical principles underpinning computer science, shared with the standard Computer Science degree in Year 1

  • Algorithms, operating systems, and other key computing concepts in Year 2

  • Machine learning, image analysis, and text analytics, and their applications from vision to automated reasoning

  • Robotics and parallel computing, alongside a wide choice of optional modules in the third year

  • How artificial intelligence is applied to economic and societal issues in fields such as medicine, health, transport, and smarter cities

  • Databases, computer architecture, and both procedural and object-oriented programming

  • Professional computing practice, applied through project work in every year of study

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to design and implement algorithms and software systems using strong foundations in programming and computer science theory. They will be able to apply artificial intelligence techniques such as machine learning and automated reasoning to real-world problems across a range of application domains. Students will also have developed practical project experience and professional skills, equipping them to keep pace with a fast-changing field.
