Course Description

Overview

Quantum computing, blockchain, encryption and emerging AI technologies are reshaping nearly every industry, opening genuine career opportunities across sectors from e-commerce and fintech to healthcare and telecommunications. The BSc (Hons) Computing Science at the University of Aberdeen builds practical skills in software development, programming, modelling and web development before moving into artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, machine learning and data mining. Students are taught by leading researchers whose work in multi-agent systems, natural language generation, machine learning and blockchain directly informs the curriculum, applying programming and problem-solving skills to real commercial, scientific and socio-economic contexts. Strong industry ties, including with organisations such as Amazon, CGI and ScotlandIS, bring guest lectures, seminars and prizes into the course, while students can gain hands-on experience through the Aberdeen Software Factory, a student-run software house working on real external projects. Regular events such as the ACM Programming Contest, Code the City and the Inform Prize give students additional opportunities to apply their skills competitively. The course suits students excited by the practical and theoretical sides of computing who want genuine flexibility, with the university's Turing Network membership connecting teaching to cutting-edge national research in data science and AI. It particularly suits those aiming for careers spanning software development, technical consultancy or graduate programming roles, with the option to add a placement year or extend into an integrated master's.

What You'll Learn

  • Programming fundamentals and problem-solving techniques for computing

  • Web development, covering HTML, CSS and JavaScript alongside modern frameworks

  • Object-oriented programming, data structures and basic software engineering techniques

  • Databases and data management, including spatial data and data warehousing

  • Human-computer interaction and usability design

  • Algorithms and data structures, covering efficiency and computational complexity

  • Artificial intelligence, operating systems, distributed systems and security

  • A substantial final-year individual research project, alongside professional practice and ethics

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply programming, modelling and software engineering skills to design and build effective computing solutions across a wide range of commercial and scientific contexts. They will be equipped to use their understanding of databases, algorithms and human-computer interaction to develop usable, well-structured systems, while engaging critically with topics such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Through team-based software projects and a substantial individual research project, students will develop the practical, collaborative and research skills needed to investigate real computing problems and report on their findings rigorously. Graduates will leave with strong technical and professional skills, well prepared for careers such as software developer, technical consultant or graduate programmer across sectors including banking, technology and telecommunications.
