Course Description

Overview

Turning financial uncertainty into manageable risk takes a rare mix of mathematical rigour and real-world commercial insight, skills at the very heart of the actuarial profession. The BSc (Hons) Actuarial Science at the University of Essex blends solid mathematics with an understanding of financial systems, optimisation and computing, covering much of the core syllabus set by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Students learn from practising actuaries alongside academics within the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, ranked 6th in the UK for mathematics, with input from industry partners such as AXA and Buck Consultants. The course suits students with a genuine passion for mathematics and practical problem-solving, with strong potential exemptions from professional actuarial exams on graduation.

What You'll Learn

  • Mathematical finance and financial reporting

  • Contingencies, risk management and survival analysis

  • Mathematical, statistical and probabilistic techniques for assessing risk

  • Programming and computation using languages such as MATLAB and R

  • Core subjects aligned with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries syllabus

  • Real-world financial issues facing commerce, government, insurance and finance

  • Employability skills shaped by contributions from practising actuaries in industry

  • Pure and applied mathematics, explored within an active research community

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical, statistical and probabilistic techniques to assess and manage financial risk in real-world contexts such as insurance, government and finance. They will be equipped to use programming and computational tools, including MATLAB and R, to build and evaluate actuarial models. Through direct engagement with practising actuaries and industry partners, students will develop practical, professional-standard skills relevant to real actuarial work. Graduates will leave with strong technical and analytical abilities, along with potential exemptions from professional actuarial exams, well prepared for a career as a qualified actuary or in wider data-driven financial roles.
