Overview
The BSc (Hons) Actuarial Science at the University of York combines mathematics, statistics, economics and financial principles to explore how uncertainty and risk can be measured and managed. The course develops quantitative and analytical understanding for examining financial outcomes, modelling uncertainty and making informed decisions in situations where future results cannot be known with certainty.
What You'll Learn
Mathematical concepts and techniques used in actuarial and financial analysis.
Probability and statistics for understanding uncertainty and analysing data.
Financial mathematics, including interest, investment and financial calculations.
Economic principles and their relevance to financial decision-making.
Actuarial methods for evaluating risk and estimating potential future outcomes.
Statistical and mathematical modelling of uncertain events and financial situations.
Data analysis and computational approaches to quantitative problems.
Research, problem-solving, critical evaluation and effective communication of mathematical findings.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical, statistical and economic principles to problems involving risk and uncertainty. They will understand how financial models can be used to assess possible future outcomes and evaluate the assumptions underlying quantitative analysis. Students will develop the ability to analyses data, select appropriate mathematical and statistical techniques and interpret results accurately. They will also be able to construct logical solutions to complex quantitative problems, assess evidence critically and explain technical findings clearly. The course encourages a systematic approach to financial and actuarial questions, combining numerical reasoning with an understanding of the economic and practical factors that influence decisions under uncertainty.
