Course Description

Overview

Understanding how the body is structured and how its systems function underpins nearly every field connected to health, medicine and biological science. The BSc (Hons) Applied Anatomy at the University of Bristol builds thorough knowledge of human and veterinary anatomy through genuinely hands-on teaching, including dissection and prosection-based study of major mammalian body systems. The course moves from foundational anatomical science through detailed comparative and clinical study, culminating in an original research project shaped by each student's own interests. It suits students who want a practical, dissection-based route into anatomy, with strong grounding for further study in fields such as medicine, veterinary science or biomedical research.

What You'll Learn

  • The principles of vertebrate design and comparative anatomy, with an emphasis on structure-function relationships

  • Physiology, functional neuroanatomy and an introduction to neuroscience

  • Detailed human and veterinary anatomy through prosection-based study

  • Full-body dissection experience

  • Diagnostic imaging techniques applied to normal and abnormal tissue

  • The normal function, ageing and dysfunction of the mammalian body

  • Engagement with current anatomical research through expert-led seminar discussion

  • An original independent research project shaped by your own interests and career goals

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain the structure and function of major mammalian body systems from comparative, functional and clinical perspectives. They will be equipped to apply practical anatomical skills, including dissection and diagnostic imaging techniques, to the study of normal and abnormal tissue. Through an independent research project and engagement with current anatomical research, students will develop strong critical thinking, scientific communication and research skills. Graduates will leave with a rigorous, practically grounded understanding of anatomy, along with the discipline-specific and transferable skills needed for further study in fields such as medicine, veterinary science or biomedical research, or for a range of careers requiring strong scientific and analytical ability.
