Overview

Artificial intelligence now shapes how we tackle complex challenges across economics, healthcare, education and agriculture, and demand for skilled AI practitioners continues to grow rapidly. The BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence at the University of Essex builds a comprehensive understanding of AI models, algorithms and systems, alongside strong core computer science foundations, taught within a School that was among the first in the UK to house dedicated AI research. Students gain access to 24/7 computing labs and specialist facilities for brain-computer interfaces and intelligent environments, with the option to complete a placement year at organisations such as ARM, Microsoft and Intel. The course suits students who want genuine technical depth in AI, with the flexibility to specialise across machine learning, robotics or natural language processing.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core computer science principles alongside a strong theoretical and practical understanding of AI models, algorithms and systems. They will be equipped to use specialist AI techniques, from machine learning to computer vision and natural language processing, to address complex real-world problems. Through specialist modules and hands-on programming work, students will develop the technical versatility to apply AI across diverse sectors and disciplines. Graduates will leave with in-demand, industry-relevant AI expertise, well prepared for careers spanning software and systems analysis, engineering, healthcare technology, business consultancy and the computer games industry.

Requirements

Kuwait: High School / Shahadat Al-Thanawiya Al-A'ama (General Secondary Education Certificate) is not accepted for direct undergraduate entry. Completion of a recognized foundation course (or A-Levels / equivalent qualification) is required
UKVI IELTS (Academic) 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 (or approved SELT equivalent)
Minimum overall average of 50% in the Foundation Programme required to progress to Year 1 of the Bachelor's degree
Completion of the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) / English Language Module within the Foundation Programme with a minimum score of 60% with no section below 55%
Minimum pass score of 40% in FC309 Mathematics, FC300 Extended Project and FC308 Information Technology in the Foundation Programme
