Overview
This foundation year route gives students the mathematical grounding and technical skills needed to progress into a full degree spanning artificial intelligence and data science. At the University of Derby, the programme responds to the fast-growing demand for professionals who can extract meaning from data and build intelligent systems across sectors such as healthcare, transport and commerce.
What You'll Learn
Mathematical foundations underpinning data analysis and AI
Practical techniques for processing data and drawing meaningful insight from it
Principles behind constructing AI systems and models
Hands-on work in specialist facilities, including data visualisation and immersive/mixed-reality environments
A mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and team-based projects
An Individual Project module involving applied research and innovation methods
Assessment through coursework, portfolios, presentations, case studies and collaborative work rather than written exams
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical and computational methods to analyse complex data sets and translate findings into practical insight. They will understand how to design and construct AI models and systems, and will have developed the research, teamwork and problem-solving abilities needed to move into roles such as data scientist, data analyst, data engineer or machine learning engineer.
