Course Description

Overview

The natural world spans everything from microscopic cells to entire ecosystems, and understanding how life works at every scale remains one of the most vital areas of scientific inquiry today. The BSc (Hons) Biology at Newcastle University offers a thorough grounding in this subject, taking advantage of the region's varied habitats and the university's city-centre location close to the Northumberland countryside. Teaching combines theoretical grounding in modern on-campus laboratories with hands-on application in the field, supported by residential courses and access to facilities including university farms, a marine laboratory, and museum biological collections. The programme is shaped by an active research culture, with staff working at the forefront of areas such as microbial biotechnology, plant biology, animal physiology, and conservation. Students can also tailor their studies toward specialisms including biotechnology, microbiology, and ecological survey techniques as the course progresses. This degree suits those with a genuine curiosity about living systems and a willingness to engage with both classroom theory and outdoor investigation. Graduates leave with a well-rounded scientific skill set and the confidence to pursue further study or a career across scientific and related fields.

What You'll Learn

Genetics and evolutionary processes

The diversity, form and function of living organisms

Ecology and conservation principles

Cell biology and biomolecular structure

Core academic and professional skills for the biosciences

Experimental design and statistical analysis

Specialist options such as animal physiology, plant biology, microbial biochemistry and marine biology

Field-based investigation and identification techniques

An independent research project in the final year, with routes into molecular biology, computational modelling or biodiversity and conservation

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to draw on a broad and detailed understanding of biological systems, ranging from molecular and cellular processes through to whole organisms and ecological communities, and will be equipped to critically evaluate scientific evidence and apply biological concepts to real-world environmental and conservation challenges. Extensive laboratory and fieldwork throughout the degree builds practical competence in experimental design, data collection and analysis, and the use of specialist equipment and techniques, while residential field courses and access to dedicated research facilities reinforce these skills in authentic settings. Students will also develop the ability to work independently on a substantial research project, choosing a specialist focus such as molecular biology and biotechnology, biological modelling, or biodiversity and conservation, allowing them to deepen their expertise in an area aligned with their own scientific interests while strengthening the analytical and communication skills expected of a bioscience graduate.
