.Overview

The BSc (Hons) Computer Science at Swansea University explores the principles and technologies behind modern computing, with a strong focus on programming, software development and computational problem-solving. The course develops both theoretical understanding and practical skills, enabling students to investigate how computer systems are designed, implemented and applied to solve complex problems.

What You'll Learn

  • Programming and software development using appropriate computational techniques.

  • Algorithms and data structures for designing efficient solutions to computing problems.

  • Computer architecture and the fundamental components of modern computer systems.

  • Operating systems and the interaction between software and computer hardware.

  • Databases and methods for storing, managing and retrieving information.

  • Computer networks and principles of communication between connected systems.

  • Software engineering practices for designing, developing, testing and maintaining software.

  • Artificial intelligence and other contemporary areas of computer science.

  • Mathematical and theoretical concepts that support computational reasoning.

  • Research, project development, critical analysis, problem-solving and technical communication.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyses computing problems and develop appropriate software and computational solutions. They will understand how programming, algorithms, data, hardware, operating systems and networks contribute to modern computer systems. Students will develop the ability to design, implement, test and evaluate software while applying structured approaches to technical problem-solving. They will also be able to assess technical information critically, investigate computing topics independently and communicate complex concepts clearly. The course supports the development of logical reasoning, practical programming ability and a broad understanding of computer science, enabling students to evaluate different technical approaches and make informed decisions when addressing computational challenges.
