Overview
The BSc (Hons) Computer Science at the University of Nottingham develops a broad understanding of computing, combining theoretical foundations with practical problem-solving and software development. The course explores how computer systems are designed, programmed and applied, while allowing students to develop interests in areas such as artificial intelligence, security and user experience.
What You'll Learn
Programming concepts, programming languages and software development practices
Computer architecture, operating systems and concurrent computing
Algorithms, data structures and computational efficiency
Software engineering, including collaborative development and testing
Computer security, cryptography and secure computing principles
Artificial intelligence, machine learning and related computational methods
User interfaces, mobile applications and emerging areas of computing
Formal methods, programming language concepts and mathematical reasoning
Professional, ethical, social and legal considerations in computing
Practical group and research-based approaches to designing computer systems
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply programming and computational principles to develop software and solve complex problems. They will understand how computer hardware and software systems operate, and be able to select and use appropriate algorithms and data structures for different computational tasks. Students will also be able to evaluate software in terms of efficiency, maintainability, security and reliability, while applying structured approaches to development and testing. Through collaborative project work, they will develop experience in planning, designing, implementing and documenting computing solutions. The course will also enable students to critically consider the wider professional, ethical and societal implications of computer technology and to explore specialist areas of computer science according to their academic interests.
