Overview
Software now drives innovation across every sector, and learning to build it well means combining strong coding fundamentals with exposure to high-demand fields such as AI, cybersecurity and data science. The BSc (Hons) Computer Science at Swansea University is taught within the £32.5 million Computational Foundry, home to specialist labs spanning vision and biometrics, robotics, cyber security and visualisation. The curriculum is shaped directly by industry input and delivered by practitioners with backgrounds ranging from BAFTA-nominated game development to cyber security research with partners such as Airbus and HSBC. The course suits students who want a genuinely practical, BCS-accredited computing education, with the option to add a year abroad or a year in industry to build real workplace experience.
What You'll Learn
Data representation, computer architecture and core programming and software engineering skills
Introductory data science, alongside professional, security and digital technology issues
Declarative programming, algorithms, database systems and formal language theory
Optional specialisms such as artificial intelligence, intelligent robotics, concurrency or software security engineering
Human-computer interaction and visual computing techniques
Advanced topics including big data, machine learning, cryptography and IT security
Practical development skills through modules such as mobile app writing and web application development
A substantial final-year project, from specification and development through to implementation and dissertation
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core computer science principles across programming, algorithms and system architecture to design and build effective software solutions. They will be equipped to specialise in areas of genuine interest, from artificial intelligence to cyber security, drawing on a wide range of advanced technical modules. Through a substantial final-year project, students will develop the ability to specify, develop and implement a significant piece of software independently, while showcasing their work to employers at the university's annual Project Fair. Graduates will leave with a BCS-accredited, industry-relevant skill set spanning software engineering, AI, cybersecurity and data science, well prepared for further study or a wide range of technology careers.
