Course Description

Overview

This programme introduces students to the core principles and practical skills that underpin modern computing, an area that increasingly shapes fields ranging from healthcare to finance. At the University of Kent, learners build a solid base in programming, systems, and mathematical reasoning before progressing to more specialised areas of the discipline. The course is structured to combine theoretical grounding with practical application, preparing students for further study in computer science.

What You'll Learn

  • Core programming concepts and practices, including object-oriented approaches to software development

  • Mathematical and statistical foundations relevant to computing, covering topics such as algebra, functions, and probability

  • The building blocks of computer systems, from hardware components to programming language abstraction

  • Internet and web technologies, including networking principles and front-end development basics

  • Principles of human-computer interaction and user-centred interface design

  • Introductory exposure to areas such as algorithms, databases, and software engineering practice

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to write and debug code confidently, applying sound programming logic to solve practical problems. They will understand how computer systems function at multiple levels of abstraction, from hardware to high-level software. Students will also be equipped with the mathematical reasoning skills needed to analyse computational problems and interpret data. In addition, learners will be able to evaluate the usability of digital interfaces and apply basic design principles to improve user experience. Overall, students will finish with the grounding required to progress confidently into further computer science study, having developed both technical competence and problem-solving skills applicable across the computing field.
