Course Description

Overview

Computer science combines logic, creativity and technical insight, and it drives innovation across industry, government and everyday life. Studying BSc (Hons) Computer Science at the University of Strathclyde gives students a rigorous grounding in how sophisticated computing systems are designed, built and understood. The degree balances theoretical foundations with practical skills, beginning with programming and computer systems before moving into algorithms, databases, logic and software design. In later stages students explore more specialised areas such as artificial intelligence, mobile and web development, and computer security, and they complete a substantial project of their own. Teaching draws on guest lecturers from industry, and companies collaborate with the department on final-year projects. The course is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, and students can take an exchange year abroad. It suits those who enjoy analytical problem solving and teamwork, and graduates gain the technical depth to influence emerging technologies and pursue careers in software development, consultancy or business analysis.

Algorithms, logic and the mathematical basis of computing

Computer systems, architecture and concurrency

Databases, user modelling and data modelling

Functional programming

Software design and group-based software development

Web and mobile application development

Foundations of artificial intelligence

Computer security and human-centred security

Professional, legal, social and ethical issues in computing

An individual project, with optional industry-linked work

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will understand computing from its theoretical principles through to the hardware and software of real systems, and will be able to design, build and test substantial programs with confidence. They will apply algorithmic and logical thinking to model and measure computation, and will understand how computer architecture and concurrency affect performance. Students will be able to develop web and mobile applications, work with data and information systems, and recognise threats and vulnerabilities in order to propose sound security measures. Group projects strengthen teamwork and communication, while the individual project demonstrates independent practical and written competence. Students will also be able to evaluate the legal, ethical and professional implications of their work, and to apply quantitative methods when assessing software. Optional advanced modules allow them to specialise in areas such as artificial intelligence, information mining or software architecture, and the accredited degree prepares them for professional roles, further study or a year of exchange abroad.
