Course Description

Overview

Mastering the scientific principles, software development methodologies, and technological architectures behind computing is essential to driving digital transformation across modern global industries. The Computer Science BSc (Hons) at Manchester Metropolitan University delivers a practical, industry-aligned education situated within the Department of Computing and Mathematics in the £115 million Dalton Building. Accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) and an educational affiliate of the Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec), the curriculum blends core programming, hardware systems, algorithms, and computational theory with practical software engineering. Located within Manchester’s prominent digital technology hub, students gain hands-on experience using modern computing infrastructure, industry-standard software frameworks, and collaborative group projects. The program emphasizes real-world application through hackathons, live employer briefs, and specialized pathways, alongside options to undertake a four-year placement route in industry. This course is ideally suited for logically minded, technically ambitious individuals who wish to build resilient software, master artificial intelligence and cybersecurity systems, and launch careers across the technology and digital sectors.

What You'll Learn

  • Core programming languages, object-oriented design, software engineering methodologies, and code optimization practices

  • Fundamental algorithms, data structures, computational complexity, and mathematical techniques for computing

  • Computer systems architecture, low-level hardware integration, operating systems, and network communication fundamentals

  • Database design paradigms, relational data modeling, SQL query management, and modern web application development

  • Cybersecurity principles, information security frameworks, system risk management, and network defense strategies

  • Artificial intelligence concepts, machine learning algorithms, deep learning models, and responsible AI implementation

  • Cloud computing platforms, distributed systems architectures, and enterprise software deployment strategies

  • Human-computer interaction principles, user experience design, computer graphics, and digital media technologies

  • Major final-year individual capstone software development project or empirical research investigation solving a complex computing challenge

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will possess a thorough understanding of computer systems architecture, software engineering methodologies, algorithmic paradigms, and digital security frameworks. They will demonstrate the capability to design, construct, and evaluate complex software applications, analyze computational problems, and deploy secure databases across distributed systems architectures. Students build strong practical competencies in multi-paradigm programming, data structure design, system debugging, and machine learning implementation through hands-on laboratory sessions and collaborative team software builds. Furthermore, scholars master the ability to communicate complex technical architectures clearly, document software specifications, and evaluate the ethical, legal, and societal impacts of computing technologies. Upon graduation, students fulfill the educational requirements for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status through the BCS, preparing them to excel as software developers, cybersecurity engineers, systems architects, AI specialists, data engineers, or technology consultants.
